KUALA LUMPUR: IOI Corp Bhd has offered to relinquish its interest over 5,000ha of land, in a breakthrough in the IOI Pelita land dispute with local communities in Tinjar, Sarawak. In a statement, IOI Corp said the intended relinquishment of interest by IOI Pelita would be on remaining land (out of the total land area of 9,000ha) which has not been planted with oil palm by them. The Sarawak state government has also made a far-reaching and unprecedented offer to declare the 5,000ha a Native Communal Reserve, and subsequently grant the communities communal and individual land titles, which give better legal rights and protections than native customary rights. IOI Corp’s offer was made on March 17,2021 in Miri at a dialogue session held by the Sarawak state government with all the eight community groups. The dialogue session was chaired by the Acting Residen of Miri, Abdul Aziz Mohamad Yusuf, and attended by Assistant State Minister of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil, and IOI Pelita’s representatives. IOI Pelita’s offer is conditional on all parties to the dispute reaching an agreement on the exact terms of the final dispute settlement. These terms will be discussed at the upcoming last stage of the resolution process, the negotiation stage, where expert advice will also be offered to the communities. The negotiation stage will start as soon as the current interstate travel restrictions due to the pandemic are lifted.
